Before joining MX Logic, Mr. Hegland served as Vice President of Sales for the Intrusion Detection and Prevention Group of NetScreen, a leading developer of integrated network security solutions. Mr. Hegland joined NetScreen through the acquisition of OneSecure and exceeded all revenue goals and integration expectations. Prior to NetScreen, Mr. Hegland was Vice President of Sales for OneSecure, a developer of intrusion prevention and detection software. An MX record is simply an entry in a domain name database that identifies the mail server responsible for handling email for that domain. In other words, your MX record is like your primary postal address, to which all of your mail is sent. When you use MX Logic, you change your MX record to make the address of MX Logic your primary address, so all email from the outside is sent to MX Logic first. MX Logic’s Email Defense Service simply filters your email as it is redirected to your true address. Does MX Logic’s Email Defense Service decrease the security of our email? No. On average, a single email experiences 7–10 “hops” (the number of routers through which it is sent) as it travels from sender to recipient. MX Logic becomes the final “hop” in the journey. But even by adding this extra “hop,” you are introducing no additional insecurity to the process of sending or receiving email. In fact, while MX Logic acts like any other router in the transmission process, it actually adds a layer of security to your email by cloaking your MX record from the Internet, where it may otherwise be accessible by spammers and hackers. If it is required that we point our MX record to MX Logic, does this mean you will have access to our email? No. While MX Logic’s filters do comprise the final “hop” a message takes en route to your network, we do not have the capabilities to intercept or review email. The MX Logic message processing centers, which become your primary MX record, act as proxies when receiving your inbound email. Messages are filtered in real-time as they are being simultaneously delivered into your messaging environment. Because MX Logic’s service is proxy-based, your messages are not stored to disk in order to be filtered, where they can be lost if the disk is damaged or corrupted (this can occur with competitive solutions that use store-and-forward technology). In fact, the MX Logic solution introduces more security by cloaking the location of your messaging servers and removing anonymous SMTP connections. Does MX Logic have access to our quarantined email? No. MX Logic quarantines email only when you have created a quarantine policy for suspect messages. Even then, junk messages are symmetrically encrypted on a secure file system. Do we lose control of our MX record when we point it to MX Logic? No. The MX record remains in your control. At anytime your MX record may be configured to point back to your messaging infrastructure. You may also lower your MX record’s time-to-live (TTL) to increase propagation times. Does MX Logic’s Email Defense Service filter email internal to our network? As a proxy-based managed service, MX Logic currently does not offer filtering for email sent within an internal messaging network (intranet). With the forthcoming introduction of our on-premise message filtering solution we will support internal email filtering. What is the frequency of upgrades and how do they get applied to the service? Does it require scheduled downtime? MX Logic schedules weekly upgrades during our regular maintenance window which occurs on Thursdays from 12am to 4am US Eastern Standard time. Upgrades are automatically applied to the service during this maintenance window. All email is still processed and filtered during this time. Only access to the configuration portal, the MX Control Console, is unavailable during the upgrade maintenance window. Is MX Logic’s Email Defense Service an “outsourced service”? No. MX Logic’s Email Defense Service is a “Managed Service”. A “managed service” is often misunderstood and viewed as the same as an “outsourced service” when in fact they are quite distinct. As a proxy service, MX Logic neither accepts nor denies the delivery of email to your MTA - Message Transfer Agent. As such, MX Logic is an Internet-based service, which filters your email before it enters your network. Thus you do not lose control of your data, change the management of your email servers, or redirect email policy or the management of email policy from the company to an outside organization. Your mail remains 100% under your control, yet you garner maximum protection of your infrastructure and domain by leveraging the MX Logic service to cloak your messaging environment from the net. By doing so your company can add significant protection where no controls exist BEFORE trouble lands on your servers. Will our email be stored on MX Logic’s servers? Unlike a number our competitors, MX Logic does not accept your email, store it on servers, scan it, and then send it on (“store and forward”). MX Logic’s proxy-based method filters email real-time “on the stream”. Legitimate emails are never written to any media unless our customer requests it. In fact, MX Logic handles all mail processing via memory and only stores quarantined mail to hard disk. Is there a risk that legitimate email sent to our company will accidentally be blocked? MX Logic’s multi-layered Stacked Classification FrameworkSM ensures that legitimate email will not get blocked. MX Logic has achieved over 98.5% filtering accuracy with an industry-leading false positive rate (legitimate email wrongly detected as spam). In the rare event of a false positive, MX Logic provides each end-user with a daily Spam Quarantine Report. This report enables end-users to locate any false positives, release them to their inbox, and ensure that those messages are not blocked in the future.
